In December 2002 the work group "Cultural Landscapes - Specification for Regional Planning" has started as a 4R-project. Its objective is to specify the notion of a "grown cultural landscape" which is used in the German Regional Planning Act, and to illustrate how the demand for a "grown cultural landscape" can be met in practice.

The project consists of several stages to formulate recommendations: analysis of the existing laws, legal specification of the term "grown cultural landscape", methods for the analysis of cultural landscapes, administrative responsibilities for cultural landscapes and the role of regional planning. Drafts for some parts of the project have been composed. They have been discussed on the meetings in 2005. Final project approval will be the beginning of 2006.
